The design of the library building explores the ambivalence between the old function of the library and the new claim to be a multi-functional place of knowledge. The concept of the library is based on the stacking of closed boxes between which in turn clearances arise, forming diverse constellations of closed and open space-configurations between themselves. The open spaces offer room for changing functions and events. The shape of the honeycomb is the basic element on which all the constructive design and functional elements of the building are being developed. The eleven-storey tower stands right on the Boulevard and contains the library functions. A five-storey block with the archive, administration and auditorium surrounds the library tower. The open space is a network of paths and different space configurations which traverse the green areas, including the Boulevard, and offer new opportunities and stay qualities for transporting the activities out and into the city.
